Confused about weapons and gems

I just got the game today I'm
Lvl 20 right now and my bags are filled
With gems...I want to know how u can put them
On weapons and if u
Can't then what are the sockets on the weapons for
One more thing
What is the lvling of weapons based on?
Dmg,lvl of mob,or amount of mobs u kill

1) gems can be slotted into weapons at a blacksmith, it chances losing your materials + gem if it fails (without the IAP scroll of refinement)
2) weapon skill up is based on a weird "exp" like scale of kills with said weapon, this applies to spells as well the killing blow counts towards the skill up! That being said whirlwind with mace, dash with spear/polearm and arrow assault with bow that kill multipule targets (this is my experience atleast) seem to chain skill ups faster!
